How far between roadhouses?

Roadhouses:  The longest distance between roadhouses just under 200km. Make sure you are fully re-stocked for each leg and aware of when each roadhouse closes. Between Norseman & Ceduna, only Border village operates 24 hours.

What about the road trains?

Road trains: The most important part of any cycling trip is to make it home. Safety is important when you're it's a long way between stops and the roads are shared with road trains.

Most road train drivers are excellent, but you can't tell the good from the bad when they approach. There are some sections with wide shoulders and others with zero road shoulder.

Be highly visible. Have at least one mirror and check it regularly. Get a UHF radio (Ch40) and use it. "Eastbound truck, cyclist on the road ahead. It looks clear for safe pass. I'll leave the road if there's oncoming traffic". The truckies talk to each other and should be aware you're out there.

If two vehicles are going to cross where you're riding and there is not a wide road shoulder, move off the road. It's not a legal requirement, but a much safer option.

Is it safe to camp?

Camping: It's extremely likely that you'll be camping. Even if you can cover the 200km between roadhouses, most have limited accommodation and may not have a vacancy.

The stories of Australia's dangerous animals is mostly in jest. The only issue I've had was the time I stood on an ant nest while trying to find a camping area in the middle of the night. Dingo encounters can occur. Mine have all been while riding and a loud yell has stopped them trailling me each time.

As well as rest areas & truck parking bays, I've camped many times just finding a cleared patch of ground 20 metres or so away from the edge of the road.

What is communication like?

Communication: Mobile coverage is available with Telstra whe close to roadhouses. A couple now have Starlink. Between roadhouses and with other providers, there is no coverage. Carrying a Personal Locator Beacon that allows an emergency SOS to be sent is advised. There is usually enough traffic that someone will pass soon, but best to be safe.

The Indian Pacific Wheel Ride is an annual bike-packing ride from Fremantle to Sydney. This was the reason for my first attempt at crossing the paddock. The riders of this event have graciously shared their knowledge
